Black women Cultivating Our Future in the Present
Having emerged in the late 20th century, Afrofuturism is a rich and multifaceted cultural movement that intricately weaves together elements of science fiction, African mythologies, imaginative storytelling, and the pursuit of sociopolitical liberation. This genre serves as a powerful vehicle for reimagining the Black experience and identity, delving deep into the complexities of history, culture, and the possibilities of the future.

Black women have always played a central and transformative role in this genre, bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to the forefront of Afrofuturist narratives. These women are not merely participants in the movement; they are pioneers and visionaries who have profoundly influenced its trajectory. Currently, the most popular and influential names in Afrofuturism are women, including authors, filmmakers, musicians, and visual artists, who are reshaping the entire landscape of this genre. Figures such as Octavia Butler, Nnedi Okorafor, and Janelle Monáe have become emblematic of this movement, using their platforms to challenge conventional storytelling and to create spaces where Black narratives can thrive.
Through their creativity and innovation, these women are not only redefining Afrofuturism but are also inspiring a new generation of artists and thinkers to engage with the possibilities that lie ahead. Dr. Susana M. Morris, a scholar of Black Feminism, Black Digital Media, and Afrofuturism, at Georgia Institute of Technology is a leading Afrofuturist researcher. Along with her latest book project exploring Black women’s relationships to Afrofuturism and feminism, she co- editor of the book series New Suns: Race, Gender, and Sexuality in the Speculative. She share with us her journey through Afrofuturism scholarship, including her study of the foundational women in this genre and experiences teaching Afrofuturism courses.
