Belongingness for Black Sexual & Gender Minorities

Updated: 1 day ago

Creating spaces that celebrate and embrace intersectional identities

In today's social and political climate, the mental health challenges faced by sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities are more pressing than ever. Unfortunately there remains a significant gap in research regarding the unique experiences of Black SGM individuals. These individuals navigate multiple layers of marginalization, all while grappling with the intersections of gender identity, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity.

Being part of identity-based communities can serve as a vital buffer against the adverse effects of these stressors, providing essential coping mechanisms. However, the reality is often more complex. Black SGM women frequently encounter stigma and discrimination not only from broader society but also within their own racial, sexual, and gender minority communities contributing to a sense of isolation and heightened vulnerability.

In this podcast, we will explore these dynamics, shedding light on the importance of belongingness for Black SGM women with Dr. Konjit V. Page. A core faculty member in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Fielding Graduate University, her research focuses on racial and sexual orientation identity in psychological training and research. She is also the founder and CEO of New Page Consulting, a company dedicated to providing diverse and inclusive solutions and interventions for the tech and entertainment industries.
