Trying... Black Women & Infertility

1 in 6 people globally are affected by infertility, with Black women among the most vulnerable!

Michelle Obama, Khandi Burruss, Tyra Banks, Angela Bassett, Gabrielle Union- these women all had differing experiences with infertility. Although it is a complex and challenging issue that affects many couples, Black women are more likely than white women to encounter trouble getting pregnant. conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome are more common in black women and can contribute to difficulties in conceiving.

The stigma surrounding infertility within the black community can also prevent women from seeking help and support, further exacerbating the issue. We are 50% less likely to receive fertility treatments (Jackson-Bey, 2021) due to the overwhelming associated emotional and financial burdens. Further, cultural messages centering the role of motherhood and the importance of creating families can add an extra layer of stress for those negotiating infertility. Clearly understanding the prevalence of infertility in black women requires a comprehensive approach that considers both medical and social factors.
